My middle name, Mandel, translates to “almond” in German.  The name comes from my maternal grandfather’s original last name, and so I find this odd, since as far as I know no one in my family is German.  But I did buy a “Mandel” chocolate bar just to see how tasty I was.

  1. Mandel is our last name given to my fraternal grandfather when he arrived here about 1890 or so. He was a northern Russian and we actually do not know what his true name was – although we know it was something harder to pronounce and even harder to spell than Mandel It is DEFINiTELY not German in origin.
