Off the Shallow End

A sucker, I
For pretty eyes
A perfect face
A narrow waist

So often I
Can only find
The way to see
What seems to be

What lies skin deep
Plastic and cheap
For beauty hides
What lies inside

Yet still I stare
And cannot bear
To search, to find
A heart, a mind

I want a lot
A brain, with thoughts
A wit, some grace
And yet… a face

But beauty dies
And leaves behind
The essence of
That which I love

So I ask why
Those pretty eyes
Have left me blind
To beauty’s mind
